Monday Fun Day! (5/13/2013 Edition)

Happy Monday, friends! This is a short week for me as I'm heading off on vacation starting Thursday. Let's jump into a little Macmillany goodness to get your week started, shall we?

- Congratulations to 2013 Locus Award finalists John Scalzi, author of REDSHIRTS which is up for Best Science Fiction Novel, Mary Robinette Kowal, author of GLAMOUR IN GLASS which is up for Best Fantasy Novel (I recommended this series in Uncharted Pages!), and Gardner Dozois, editor of The Year’s Best Science Fiction: Twenty-ninth Annual Collection up for Best Anthology!

We're also delighted to see that Tor.com is a finalist for Best Magazine and Tor Books has been nominated for Best Publisher! And while we're at it, a hearty applause for Tor Teen author Cory Doctorow and Mac Kids author Catherynne M. Valente who are nominated for awards as well. See the full list of Locus finalists here.

The 2012 Nebula Award Finalists

The Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America revealed their finalists for the 2012 Nebula Awards and I am geeking out over here, people!

Macmillan has two finalists up for Best Novel and I love that they're both fantasies based on two most excellent Janes (Austen and Eyre, respectively):

Monday Fun Day! (2/13/2012 Edition)

Happy Monday, lovely librarians! Let's kick of the week with some great reads.

- For the SHADES OF MILK AND HONEY fans out there, tor.com posted a nice long excerpt from the beginning of the sequel, GLAMOUR IN GLASS. It begins,

"There are few things in this world that can at once delight and dismay to the same extent as a formal dinner party."

- Shelf Awareness reviewed Esi Edugyan's Scotiabank Giller-winning novel, HALF-BLOOD BLUES. They said,

"One of the risks of historical fiction is that the history can get in the way of the fiction; the author's imagination is often crammed into a box of flat characters and plodding narrative in the name of accuracy. Such is not the case with Esi Edugyan's atmospheric second novel. [...] Edugyan's prose sparkles not only with the jive and banter of jazz musicians, but also with the metaphors of a music built on improvisation."

- NPR did a feature on Tupelo Hassman's GIRLCHILD (which you will recognize as the Featured Cover from our January e-newsletter!).

"Tupelo Hassman writes with such an eye for rough-and-tough detail, she obviously knows something about kids who have been given the dubious gift of premature autonomy."

- Author S.J. Bolton posted a piece on Goodreads called "Why we need our libraries." She talks about the experience of her local library (in the U.K.) transferring into the hands of the community after the government withdrew support. Bolton was then asked to manage the future purchase and rotation of books which she gladly accepted. Here are a few choice quotes from the article:

"A library, like the pub, the post office, the village shop, is part of the fabric of the community."

"No one, especially not my neighbours, should imagine the battle is over. Passing libraries into community ownership hasn't saved them, it has given them a stay of execution. If we are to keep them into the future, we'll need the ongoing commitment of our volunteers and the financial support of our sponsors. Most of all, though, we will need our libraries to be used."

Monday Fun Day! (10/17/2011 Edition)

Hello, my charming library wizards! Welcome to a new week.

- If you were roaming the halls of New York Comic Con this weekend, I can only hope that: A. You stopped by the Tor Books booth for some rad giveaways and author signings and, B. You were dressed as Gort.

- Speaking of sci-fi, Cory Doctorow name-dropped our very own Talia Sherer in his Publishers Weekly article, "With a Little Help: Now at Your Library," discussing his experience with his "pay what you like" short story collection, With a Little Help.

"Throughout this experiment, Tor has been remarkably generous with advice and help, and this was no exception. Talia Sherer, Macmillan's library sales director, directed me to several librarians, and I tapped each of them. They were warm, and helpful, and blindingly organized about delivering advice.

"...after three months, Ingram has now listed the book in its catalogue. And I've just finished an interview with ALA's Booklist announcing the book's availability, and many librarians have offered to help spread the word through their mailing lists."

Yay!

- Fans of Mary Robinette Kowal's SHADES OF MILK AND HONEY will be ecstatic to hear that Tor plans to publish two more of her quasi-Regency fantasy sequels after, GLAMOUR IN GLASS! See the announcement here! We've received quite a few requests for GLAMOUR IN GLASS galleys, which unfortunately are not available, yet. But I read an unedited version of the manuscript and can promise that there is plenty of adventure and charm to look forward to!
