Geek Week Event Recap & Trade of Queens GIVEAWAY!

You guys remember Ben, right? Oh, you know, Ben! From waaay back when (a month ago)?

He's agreed to be my unofficial Tor liaison: slipping me galleys hot off the press and passing on whispers about upcoming Tor excitement, so I can pass it on to you! Last night Ben was gentleman enough to escort the new girl (me) to that super awesome Tor reading and concert at Housing Works Bookstore Cafe I told you all about.

It's beyond me how Jo Walton and Charles Stross have escaped reading in New York for this long since they were both eloquent and hilarious readers. If you get the chance to see either of them read, do it.

I also managed to scrounge up two copies of Stross' latest, THE TRADE OF QUEENS, for you librarians! If you would like to be entered into the drawing, send an email this week to: library at macmillanusa dot com (subject: Stross Giveaway!).

Yay! That's me! I definitely enjoyed getting to flex my understanding-thick-Scottish-accents muscle.

I'm almost amhased to admit it, but I've only recently stumbled over literally! a novel in the Kate Shugak series. (This happened at the local library.) Believing that all things happen for a reason, I picked the book up, browsed through it, took it to the info desk, and inquired as to whether or not it could be checked out.It could.I did.I finished the book over night I couldn't put it down! Yes, Dana Stabenow is an author whose novels I've invited as permanent tenants in my home library. This past week I've been haunting the local bookstores and, where necessary, placing orders. (Now, I have a stack to read through and relishing every single moment! Nightly I journey with Mutt, Kate, Jim, Johnny, Sam, the four Aunties . . . the list goes on.)What would be more lovely than listening to Marguerite Gavin's fabulous voice portraying the characters and listening to the story line with all its nuances while driving home from work? Nothing absolutely nothing could top it. I'd be the only calm driver in Albuquerque, NM during rush hour traffic. I'd probably also be the only driver with a smile on my face, listening to the audio book and not being fazed by the 100+ degree temperatures we're currently experiencing.Whether I win an audio book or not I'm delighted to have discovered Dana's novels! Thank you so much, Ms. Stabenow for such well-written literature! Your characters pulsate with life and jump off the page.
